Equipment & Settings:

You can use whatever equipment you have available to you and whatever settings you prefer, however, here are some recommendations from a seasoned pro.

  • Lighting Setup: Two continuous hybrid lights with a strip softbox positioned on either side of the subjects.

  • Camera Settings: ISO of 400, shutter speed at 1/100 of a second, and an aperture of f/5.6.

Pose 1: The Intimate Frontal

  1. Direction: Ask the couple to face each other, maintaining close proximity.

  2. Emphasis: On the woman's posterior and the back, and the man's abs and shoulders.

  3. Lighting: By placing the lights at the side, the curves of the woman's body and the lines of her legs are highlighted. This setup also emphasizes the man's chest, abdomen, and shoulders.

Take a test shot. Adjust as needed, and if the composition is just right, ask the couple to hold the pose and capture multiple shots.

Posing 2: Sideways Drama

  1. Direction: With the couple still facing each other, orient them sideways in relation to the camera. Instruct the man to bend one knee, giving a dramatic look.

  2. Positioning: Ensure that the woman's arms do not cover the man's shoulders. Keep them at a lower angle, perhaps around the waist.

Capture the shot, and observe the results. Remember, communication is key. Ensure that your subjects are comfortable and understand the vision.

Posing 3: Highlighting the Curves

  1. Direction: After turning off one of the lights, ask the woman to turn slightly sideways and position the man's hands on her waist.

  2. Emphasis: This pose is about accentuating the woman's posterior, with the man's hands adding drama and connection.

Capture the moment. Adjust elbows or hands if necessary to get the desired frame.

Posing 4: Overlapping Intimacy

  1. Direction: Ask the woman to face the camera directly. She should cover the man's body partially. Let her cross one knee over the other and raise an arm.

  2. Positioning: The man should be positioned to cover her chest, creating an intimate yet tasteful look.

Capture this engaging moment. Lighting plays a crucial role here, so ensure your continuous light provides the desired shadowing and depth.

Posing 5: Sideways Embrace

  1. Direction: The woman should turn sideways to the camera, with the man positioning his arms around her, accentuating her chest.

  2. Detail: This is a more intimate pose. Ensure the composition is balanced, with both subjects being comfortable.

Capture, and as always, make minute adjustments if necessary.

One of the main advantages of this setup is its efficiency. A beautifully intimate session can be achieved in just about five minutes with the right preparation. By having a mood board and a clear vision, the process becomes smooth, allowing the couple to be more relaxed and comfortable.

Such sessions can significantly enhance your photography packages. By offering a different style, you add value and can, therefore, charge premium. These images can be printed in larger formats, especially since they focus on the connection, body shapes, and definitions rather than the couple's identities.

Lastly, always prioritize comfort and consent. Boudoir is an intimate genre, and trust is paramount. Experiment with various poses, but always ensure the couple is at ease. Armed with a mood board and these techniques, you'll achieve captivating final images that your clients will treasure.

Happy Shooting!
